Accomplishments

  • Twice a year, starting in the fall of 2001, we have performed cleanups of trash from the stream and banks of Clearfield Creek from Ashville to Dean.
  • We have performed four cleanups per year of trash along PA 53 (Ashville to Dean) since 2001 and starting 2004, from Ashville to Syberton.
  • In June 2003, volunteers of the Association completed monthly sampling of 37 acid discharges for a year as part of the assessment of Clearfield Creek by the Cambria and Clearfield Conservation Districts, leading to prioritization and proposals for remediation. Analyses of the water samples were funded by a $12,000 grant from the Community Foundation for the Alleghenies. About 20 additional acid discharges in Clearfield County were also being sampled.
  • Passive treatment units for two acid discharges at the abandoned Klondike Mine on Little Laurel Run near Ashville were designed and constructed using grants from PA DEP, USEPA 319, US Office of Surface Mining and Western PA Watershed funds. These treatment systems will help restore the upper half of Little Laurel Run.
  • We have revegetated 11 acres of a barren strip mine at the Ferris Wheel site using funds from USEPA with assistance from Blair County Solid Waste Authority.
  • We have participated in proposals for Growing Greener and other grants to design and construct acid treatment facilities on Morgan Run (by Clearfield Co. Cons. Dist).
  • We are designing and permitting treatment systems for two acid discharges at the West Ferris Wheel site on Little Laurel Run, using EPA 319 funds.
  • We have conducted a major study of the large abandoned clay mine discharge on Brubaker Run, leading to proposals for mitigating this source.
  • We are renovating a passive treatment system originally built by now-bankrupt C&K Coal near Glasgow with funds from PA DEP.
  • We are conducting an assessment of 28 acid discharges on Muddy Run in Cambria and Clearfield Counties with a Growing Greener Grant and extensive volunteer sampling.
  • We received a $1300 grant in 2002 from Western PA Coalition for Abandoned Mine Reclamation to fund evaluation of coal refuse sites and Association activities. A report on the coal refuse sampling is available.
  • We participated in organizing a cleanout of Dysart Sportsman's Dam, and in May 2004 conducted a Fishing Derby at this dam for children under 15 with fish donated by the Holtz Family and other local groups.
  • We have conducted a Kids Fishing Derby annually since 2004 at Dysart, with up to 100 "fishing kids" participating.
  • We hold 501(c)(3) status as a charitable, tax-exempt organization.
  • We have conducted three very successful CCWA Benefit Shoots at the 7H Skeet Club, in collaboration with the Holtz Family.
  • We have maintained a display and presence at the last five annual Cider Festivals at Prince Gallitzin Park.
  • We received two awards in 2008: the "Watershed Protection Award" from Cambria County Conservation and the "Outstanding Watershed Group Award" from Clearfield County Conservation District.
  • We have assisted the PA Fish Commission with stocking Clearfield Creek between Ashville and Dysart.
