Ferris Wheel Revegetation

Ferris Wheel Photo

The unvegetated Ferris Wheel strip mine.

The Ferris Wheel Mine near Buckhorn was strip mined about 40 years ago but much of it still lacks any vegetation, and acid water seeps from its toe. The Clearfield Creek Watershed Association plans to revegetate this site to decrease infiltration of water and improve habitat.

In 2007 CCWA received a Growing Greener grant of $70,000 from the State for this site. We will use alkaline ash from "cogen" plants near Ebensburg and Johnstown to neutralize the very acid "soil," and apply a variety of other treatments including sawdust, fertilizer and several types of seed to test method of revegetation. The alkaline ash is being furnished by Robindale Energy of Seward, PA.

The revegetation will decrease seepage of acid, which will decrease requirements for treatment at the West Ferris Wheel project.
